An explosion described as minor by the Police force rocked Holy Cross Catholic church located in Iji-Nike in Enugu-East Local Government area of Enugu state at the early hours of Sunday Night.
Many parishioners and residents of the town, however, were unaware of the incidence as it occurred early in the morning before the morning mass.
Speaking to newsmen, the priest in charge of the parish, Rev Fr. Emmanuel Okwor said the incident occurred as he was preparing for the morning mass around 5:40 am.
He said people living in the neighborhood were thrown into confusion as the incidence shook the church.
Father Okwor was, however, grateful that the incidence did not happen during mass as it might have led to a stampede injuring many.
Speaking on the incidence, Enugu state police spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu said “it was a minor explosion of knockout magnitude that should not cause panic.
“We thank God that there was no loss of life nor major destruction. We have to be more vigilant and security conscious and be able to partner with security Agencies to ensure that there is no repeat of such an incident”.
